Kolkata South West to Develop Fast with New Infrastructure

Kolkata South West has become the bright new spot in the city’s real estate landscape. Areas like Behala, Joka, Thakurpukur, Silpara, Haridevpur and Maheshtala have already turned into hot property markets, while localities like Batanagar and Budge Budge that lie deeper within the South-Western end of Kolkata are also witnessing brisk real estate activity.

The good news is, with massive overhaul in infrastructure underway, there’s a steady rise in South-Western Kolkata’s connectivity to other parts of the city. Let’s take a look at some of the proposed and ongoing plans in the area.

Construction of Two Bridges Across Tolly’s Nullah

The Urban Development Ministry of the state government had long been planning to implement alternative routes that can alleviate traffic conditions in the heavily congested roads leading to Tollygunge – Korunamoyee area. And finally, KMDA has floated the tender for construction of two bridges across the Tollygunge Canal that can ease out the daily traffic snarls. Therefore, once the proposed bridges are completed, the excessive congestion on roads such as Canal Side Road, BL Saha Road, KP Roy Lane, and Prince Anwar Shah Road will be evened out.

While one of the bridges is scheduled to be constructed near Siriti, the other one is expected to come up near Prince Anwar Shah Road. Once these two bridges are completed, a major chunk of the daily traffic on both Tollygunge Circular Road as well as Korunamoyee Bridges should be eased out. Ever since the Taratala – Majerhat Bridge collapsed (4th September 2018), traffic volume on these two routes has grown up to massive proportions and traffic movement in vast parts of south-western Kolkata has been affected.

The first bridge across the Tollygunge canal is going to connect BL Saha Road (near Bangur Hospital) to Deshapran Shashmal Road via Kali Prasanna Roy Lane. This route will make for a much faster transit if you are heading towards Prince Anwar Shah Road and Tolly Club.

The second bridge is set to connect BL Saha Road towards Diamond City South via MG Road that connects Haridevpur and Korunamoyee. So you will then be able to take a smarter route near Korunamoyee Kali Mandir and reach closer to Diamond City South while heading towards Tollygunge from Haridevpur.

Elevated Traffic Corridor

Those living around Maheshtala and Budge Budge can now look forward to seamless and quicker commute with the completion of the Budge Budge Trunk Road Bridge. Proposed nearly ten years ago, the 6.8 km long elevated corridor has been named ‘Sampriti flyover’ and its construction has been completed. According to reports, the much-awaited flyover was supposed to be inaugurated before Durga Puja. While the deadline seems to be have delayed, we can hope that the corridor will be inaugurated very soon.

This elevated corridor that connects Jinjira Bazar off Taratala Road to Batanagar over Budge Budge Trunk Road is one of the major infrastructure development projects and is expected to solve daily travelling woes of more than 10 lakh people by cutting down the travel time between Batanagar and Taratala from half-an-hour to slightly more than 10 minutes.

Joka-BBD Bag Metro Railway Expansion

The expansion of the Metro Railway Network in the Tollygunge-Garia section of South Kolkata has already enhanced the connectivity of many locations across the southern part of the city. The ongoing Joka-BBD Bag metro work will boost the connectivity of South Kolkata even further. This route that extends from Joka to Diamond Park will reduce the pressure on major arterial roads of Kolkata South West. Once this route is operational, travelling from Kolkata South West to areas in the North will be easier and hassle-free for hundreds and thousands of daily commuters.

With major infrastructural renovations taking place in the south-western part of Kolkata, the real estate scenario in this region looks very promising. So if you’ve been thinking about investing in property markets in Kolkata South West, now is the time!
